Ready For The Next Step?

As the coming year lurks around inexorably, the question on every K2 parents’ mind is, “Is my child ready for Primary One?” Assessing your child’s readiness for Primary One is often challenging, stressful and distressing. Here are three fundamental aspects to consider, which will hopefully clarify your uncertainties and clear some doubts.

The first thing to ascertain is your child’s ability to control his or her daily needs. It is essential to gauge his or her independence and discipline levels. The questions below are a good example to help you evaluate your child’s daily needs:

  • Can your child dress himself/herself independently?
  • Can your child be away from the primary care giver for long periods of time?
  • Can your child go through the morning without napping?
  • Can your child sit for periods greater than half an hour?
First Step

After assessing your child’s daily needs, turn your attention preparing them for the next level in basic knowledge. By now, your child should be able to spell his or her first and last name, as well as have a general knowledge about things such as shapes, colours, animals, days of the week, months, types of food sports etc.  Possessing knowledge about these simple but key things plays a significant role in easing the transition from preschool to Primary One. As a parent, you can conjure games, which would teach them these basic things. Your child would be none the wiser as he or she sees it merely as playtime rather than learning new things.

Socialization is another crucial facet to contemplate when readying your child for Primary One. Exposure to frequent encounters and interactions with other children can greatly assist your child’s progress throughout primary school. Being around peers can enhance his communication, and therefore prepare him for situations such as sharing and problem solving.  Weekly play dates and reading sessions with neighbourhood friends can nurture and encourage interaction amongst your child, so never hesitate to make arrangements with fellow parents to materialize such meetings.

One can never fully prepare their child for this transition. Regardless, remember to be patient and loving towards your child; that is the best way to ready him or her for Primary School and ultimately, life.
